Do you think ‘power words’ and Internet marketing catch phrases work? Is their ‘power’ diluted when more people use them? What are your favourite phrases? What are your least favourite phrases? What do you think they actually mean?
Here’s my take on the few that I’ve recently come across enough times to encourage me to write about them:
“No brainer” – As in, the reader doesn’t require a brain to deduce that the associated statement or purchase of a product is without doubt. This could almost be considered an insult (even the brainless will buy this so why haven’t you?) or a ploy to shame the reader into wondering why they hadn’t bought the product/service already. Duh!
“Laser targeted” – Usually referred to the focus of something e.g. “Use our product to get laser-targeted traffic”. Don’t ask me how the thought of aiming sniper rifles at passing motorists is supposed to spur anyone into action (unless it’s an ad for an armoured Humvee).
“Explode your commission/income/profits” – Something you have to do when you forget the combination to the safe.
“My friends told me I was crazy to sell this at such a low price” – Screw them, I like you more! I’m going to sell it to you anyway, but hurry before I get sane…
“Existing customers begged me not to sell these secrets to anyone else” – A product that’s so exclusive, customers want to keep it for themselves only… And perhaps their own lists.
“I’m not going to try to sell this to you” – For when a marketer just can’t think of the words, thinks the product sells itself, or you’d simply have to be silly to not buy it! Along similar lines as the no-brainer approach.
Antyhing involving the revelation of a secret. Everyone loves secrets. The concept of a secret embodies trust and who doesn’t want to be trusted or to know what other people don’t?
