Asus Eee PC: How to Upgrade the Memory

The Asus Eee PC is a very capable machine, but some users might find the standard 512MB of RAM to be somewhat limiting in terms of the number of and the actual applications they can run or even the operating systems they can install. Fortunately, the Eee uses standard laptop memory and is easily upgraded.

At first, memory upgrades couldn’t be carried out by the user without voiding the Eee’s warranty, but Asus came to their senses and recently declared they would continue to honour any warranty even if an Eee had been fitted with extra RAM.

I don’t know about a picture painting a thousand words, but I found this video showing the Eee PC memory upgrade process to be very useful and I see little point in writing a detailed post explaining how to do it, but I will add that I also removed the Eee’s battery before starting the memory upgrade and that you can confirm you’ve installed the memory correctly by the following:

1. Boot your Eee PC

A non-booting machine is a sure sign of incompatible memory. If you get to the login screen then great!

2. Check the System Info

In the Settings tab of the main system menus, opening up the System Info utility shows you how much RAM is available to the operating system (OS). Here’s a screen shot from my Eee PC after upgrading the internal RAM to 2GB.

You may have noticed that the Memory Size is reported as 1GB. That’s because the Xandros OS supports a maximum of 1GB of memory so even thought I’ve installed a 2GB memory module, the OS can only make use of 1GB.

3. Run Diagnostics

From the Settings tab again, starting up the Diagnostics utility and looking at the System Info shows you how much RAM you actually have installed. On my Eee, you can see that there really is 2GB of RAM installed.

That’s all there is to checking your memory upgrade has been carried out successfully and you now should have an Eee PC that’s capable of having lots of applications open simultaneously and even installing a resource hungry OS such as Windows XP.

The memory I used for the upgrade was purchased from 7dayshop and was the 2GB SODIMM DDR2 667Mhz (PC2-5300) memory module.

Make Really Easy Affiliate Income - No List Required

I’ve read suggestions from many Internet marketers that the best way to make money as someone selling their own products or as an affiliate is through a mailing list. That said, it doesn’t mean that you can’t make any money without a list. It just means you have to take a different approach.

The benefit of having a list is that you have the opportunity to build a relationship with a subscriber and perhaps even an existing customer. By opting into your list, they’re literally giving you permission to send them emails and who is to say those emails can’t sometimes ask for money in exchange for goods and services?

The process is simple, you send subscribers interesting and useful newsletters to read and occasionally recommend a product you think the reader will find beneficial. Rather than report your email as spam, your reader might just snatch your affiliate link right out of your hand and run towards the checkout with their credit card in their hand.

Make no mistake, an established mailing list can prove to be a very valuable resource. They aren’t bottomless wells of gold, though. They need nurturing and they can take time to build. Send too few emails and they might forget who you are. Send too many and you’ll just drive them away. That all seems like hard work. Maybe even the kind of work that holds no interest for you. After all, not everyone wants to build a relationship with their prospects through direct email.

Fortunately, there are other ways of making lots of money as an affiliate; ways that don’t have to involve mailing lists.

Some people say that the period around Christmas tends to be slow for sales. Christmas a slow period for sales? The same time of year when the stores are packed with crazy shoppers hunting for the perfect gifts? People aren’t just crafting gifts from junk they find in their garages, they’re spending money!

Personally, over the past 2-weeks or so I’ve made over $600 in affiliate commissions alone and no lists of any kind were involved.

“How?” You might be wondering.

The exact methods I use don’t really matter. Most will be using methods you’re already familiar with or can read about on numerous websites and ebooks. The biggest influencing factor I’ve found to affect my affiliate income is the audience I target with my promotional efforts. Rather than trying to convert people into buyers, I like to target buyers who have already made that decision to purchase and are on the way to complete the transaction.

Think about that for a second. Instead of trying to make a buyer out of someone who may or may not want the product you’re promoting, why not find the people who are already wanting to buy the product you’re promoting and then help bring the product closer to them?

It’s that simple.

There’s no need to build massive lists and try to convince them to spend money. If you’re better with search engines than you are with lists then this is a great way to make money. Your target audience have already got their minds set to shopping mode. All you need to do is guide them through your affiliate link on their way to make their purchase.

If you’re still wondering how to do this, let me give you just one example of how to position yourself in between the buyer and the product.

A lot of people who are on the cusp of buying a product will use the a search engine to carry out research and often they’ll just search for the product name. This is just one opportunity for you to position yourself in front of the buyer, by presenting something in those search results that will attract their attention. It could be a review of the product or it could be some information revealing a problem with the product, but then offering a solution to that problem.

Just use your creativity, put yourself in the shoes of the buyer and ask yourself what you’d be looking for. Then promote your information so that it gets in front of the buyer using SEO, Pay Per Click, article marketing, etc. and that’s all there is to it.

As well as the easy link management element, the tracking features are just as important in helping to improve promotional efforts and reducing costs on dead-end channels.

Some merchants provide more statistics than others. It’s important that you have some mechanism of tracking not only so you can determine which of your promotional campaigns are attracting clicks, but also to ensure the data provided by merchants is accurate. Without any form of measurement of your own, you’re left to rely on what they report and they may not necessarily always get it right.

Spam, Spam, Spam

Email spam is quite a popular topic at the moment. Not only are there a few mentions in my feed reader, but just this week I decided to route all of email for my main client hosting server through a dedicated email filtering appliance which is basically a dedicated mail server kitted out with a Bayesian filter. It’s quite an advanced piece kit which is not only very accurate when it comes to identifying true spam, but also has a nice user interface to allow easy access to the quarantine and white/black lists.

As well as more accurate email filtering, it means that the web server doesn’t have to process the thousands of emails it would otherwise have to every day and can get on with serving websites. So for my web hosting clients, it’s a big plus. For me, it’s a little extra cost, but the web server is more stable and there are more resources available.

Personal Spam

Moving on to spam that I receive personally, well, I don’t really get any or at least hardly any ever gets through to me and I personally use dozens of different email addresses. I can’t even remember the last time I saw an email flagged as spam in my copy of Mailwasher Pro - a truly excellent piece of software which I use to monitor all of my active email addresses.

How’s this possible? I used to get spam, like most people do, but then I spent a lot of time researching the subject and coming up with practical ways in which to avoid it. The key to avoiding spam is prevention. Keep your email addresses as secret as possible by using CAPTCHA’d contact forms and if you really have to show an email address then take some measures to prevent it from being harvested.

After advising friends and family on how to avoid spam and them seeing a drastic reduction in the amount of spam they got, I decided to put down what I’d found into a guide…

How To Kill Your Chances Of Winning A Freelance Project

Freelancing can be a great way for developers to earn a full-time income or just earn some extra pocket money to supplement their jobs. There are a number of established websites where everyday, people offer opportunities for the right candidate.

My experience as one of those people looking for the right candidate often meets with frustration as bidders fail to impress upon me that they’re the right person for the job.

Here are some of the things that turn me off a potential bid:

  • The bidder offers a generic response to the project e.g. “Can do this!” or “We’re ready to start this” or “We are XYZ. We’ve done this, that and the other”. What are you ready to start? Don’t try to over-impress me with your past accomplishments; tell me what you can do for me and my project.
  • The bid is at the top-end of the scale without any justification as to why. It’s difficult to choose such a bid especially if it’s made by a freelancer with no previous feedback. I want someone who knows how to get the job done. Engaging someone with a lack of experience just adds to the amout of work I have to do.
  • Placing a bid, but then failing to respond to follow-up questions. Why show interest and then ignore me?
  • The bidding period isn’t over, but the freelancer will continue to hound me to pick them. I have all I need from you for now. Give me time to make my decision.

Here are some of the things that sway me in the direction of choosing a particular bid:

  • The freelancer has a history of good feedback on similar projects. This shows me that they’ve experience in the field that I’m interested in and have demonstrated they can work with project managers.
  • The freelancer demonstrates that they’ve taken the time to understand the project requirements and offer some suggestions for improvements or points out things to watch out for. This is going the extra mile to show that you’re really interested in my project.
  • A demonstration is provided before the end of the bidding period. If a freelancer can show that they’ve got what I want then it makes it very easy for me to pick them as the winning bidder.

It’s hard to escape from the relationship factor when it comes to business. Establishing a good working, business relationship can be very similar to any other relationship.

Frankly, if freelancers treated the bidding process more as a date then they’d probably be a lot more successful at winning the projects they wanted.

Random Script Execution With PHP and Cron

If you have a need to execute some server-side code at regular intervals then cron is an ideal solution. If, rather than execute code at regular intervals, you want to execute code at random intervals then cron on its own won’t do.

Combined with some PHP, cron can be used to execute code or call a script at random intervals.
