I have bought this computer 2 months ago, and found it quite limiting while running the Xandros version of Linux. I’ve researched the web, and finally upgraded to Ubuntu 8.10 using a USB stick, (and ran some minor customisations for the specific pc)

I have the 940HD with an 80g hard drive, and am finding it to be exactly what I want. It’s definitely sometthing I would recommend as a buy, if you’re willing to learn a little bit about upgrading to Ubuntu.

The benefits are that it’s really light weight, compact and fast enough. I’m thinking of picking up some more RAM, but I don’t think it’s necessary at all.

@ Dan: The Eee does get rather warm during extended periods of use. I believe there are accessories available that address the problem of heat dissipation, but I’ve not found it enough of a problem to try any of them out yet.

@ Dazza: I haven’t tried printing from my Eee yet. Currently, I have a Windows USB printer hooked up to my primary Windows PC and this is made available to other PCs on my home network however, I’ve not tried accessing it from my Eee yet.

How do you go printing from the eee? I asked at the retailer and they couldn’t tellme which orinter would connect to a Linux machine. I was also told the USB ports need to be “instaled” via internet downloads. This sounds ominous.

This is a machine that I am still wanting to get my hands on so I can try it out. I have heard that there are some heat issues and that is my number 1 complaint about laptops. I hate having warm wrists/hands while typing since I tend to spend long hours writing.

The idea of portable linux is awesome. I could work on it since many of my applications are web based.

If you need a small laptop for general computer use then it’s a worthy and relatively cheap consideration.

I must check out the eee. Anyone who I’ve read has tried it seems quite positive about it. I saw one in a shop last week, so I must go back and have a play with it.

I am just reading your blog, but I have to notice that your knowledge is big man. If I read all of your articles, excellent work. Of course I am a fan of Portable Linux for everyone if you introducing the asus eee pc.
