What's the point of no-follow? Or, in other words - why would anyone link to a site if they did not trust it? I can't think of any examples of this ??

Or, is it all down to Google, as they want to control the interweb. It's a conspiracy, I say, a conspiracy ;)

Or maybe, just maybe, there is something more sinister going on. Google wish webmasters to "no follow" links, just so that google can get more data on the type of sites that are no followed.

I know for a FACT that no-follows ARE followed...

From what I can see, Sarah, the Googlebot won't follow any links with the nofollow attribute set.

From Google's webmaster help center,

you can also instruct Googlebot not to crawl individual links by adding rel="nofollow" to a hyperlink

I think nofollow is handy if you want to say to the spiders 'I don't trust this link' and I'll use it purposely if I'm linking to a site but don't want to give them SEO credit so to speak, however I do think Google needs to be a bit clearer on its use and how googlebot reacts to a nofollow link.

I don't see how Google could view that as something to be penalised for unless the site you're linking to has already been flagged as belonging to a 'bad neighbourhood'.

Does google penalize you for linking to yourself? I have a couple instances where I have linked to another one of my articles when it was relevant. Does google see this and think something funny is going on?
