Pointless Registrations

May 27th, 2007

Why would anyone want to register themselves as a user on a WordPress blog when it provides them with no benefit?

I’ve no doubt that the spam-like user registrations I’m currently getting to this blog are automated and are intended to be exploited in blogs that provide registered users with some form of publishing capability. Whilst these registered users don’t have the ability to do anything much here, I still get the notification emails that tell me someone has registered.

I currently use the excellent Spam Karma 2 as my anti-comment spam defence, but one missing feature is the ability to block unwanted registrations to my blog. I will probably just switch registrations off since they currently serve no useful purpose, but being able to intelligently block them would be handy especially those emanating from specific domains such as mail.ru.

I’m going to deactivate registrations, but should I wish to reactivate them in the future it would be nice to have something in place to prevent automated sign-ups.

  1. Not sure if this plugin will do the job for you. It allows you to prevent certain email addresses so perhaps domains too

  2. Thanks, Sarah. I’ve installed v3.0. It works!

  3. This is a really good point Will, I have a blog which probably gets two or three registrations a week (very non tech-savvy audience). I’m starting to wonder whether they think that when they register they’ll get something?

These people get absolutely nothing for their effort!
