The Value Of Google PageRank

March 27th, 2007

Why are people so consumed with their PageRank, predicted PageRank, PageRank of inbound links, PageRank of pages with outbound link, etc.?

At the end of the day, PageRank doesn’t hold any value does it? Well, perhaps it does.

The value of PageRank is that which people hold against it and despite some who will claim it holds no value it’s understandable why people think it does.

Lots of people use Google to find things they’re looking for. Statistics tell us that Google is the most popular search engine for web-based searches. Many users of the Google search engine are willing to part with money at the end of their search. Whoever controls the searchwould therefore control the flow of money in such a transaction.

Webmasters want to get people from Google and onto their websites to spend their money. Google controls who ranks and how. Google relies on links (to some publicly unknown degree) in order to determine rankings. Google has a way to ‘weigh’ links between websites and call it Page Rank. ‘Authority’ websites tend to have a high PageRank score and also tend to rank highly for competitive search terms. Therefore, PageRank is a measure of website value.

Is PageRank worth real money? As long as people are willing to pay for PageRank e.g. links from a webpage with a high PageRank, then the answer has to be a firm, “Yes”. It’s one of the most popular factors used when determining the value of a link.

Google say this about PageRank,

Google’s complex, automated methods make human tampering with our results extremely difficult. And though we do run relevant ads above and next to our results, Google does not sell placement within the results themselves (i.e., no one can buy a higher PageRank). A Google search is an easy, honest and objective way to find high-quality websites with information relevant to your search.

Here, Google are linking placement within search results with PageRank. So, Google would seem to be suggesting that PageRank is a measurement of a determining factor when deciding rankings. Therefore, if you can secure links from similarly themed webpages with a higher PageRank in order to increase your own then you will be improving your own rankings.

And whilst you may not be able to buy a higher PageRank from within Google, there are plenty of opportunities available elsewhere online.

Google PageRank could almost be thought of as Internet currency; an artificial system of representing value that a lot of people seem to be actively trading with.
