Escaping RegisterFly Just Became That Much Harder

February 16th, 2007

Despite the best efforts of the likes of eNom to rescue stricken domain registrants from the RegisterFly debacle (1, 2, 3), RegisterFly have devised a new method to retain customers’ domains.

I’ve just tried to confirm a couple of domain transfers away from RegisterFly by visiting their confirmation page, supplying the domain name to be transferred along with a unique code and then submitting my confirmation.

Here’s what I was presented with.
Your domain transfer confirmation failed

Okay, so I tried again from the top by visiting their confirmation page and resupplying the domain name to be transferred together with the unique code…

Erm, what domain transfer request?

So I check on my account and there’s no sign of the transfers.

Worse still, my support ticket about a failed renewal (they were still happy to take the renewal fee) submitted on the 3rd February 2007 still hasn’t been responded to and neither has my support ticket about a couple of locked domains that are showing as unlocked in the customer interface. I’ve submitted a new ticket about these failed transfer confirmations, but I’m not hopeful.

A call to their technical support line is fruitless as they’re having “technical difficulties with the system” that are preventing them from accessing any information.

If you registered any domains with RegisterFly that you wanted to keep, I hope you’ve already transferred them away to another registrar.

  1. You may want to check out http://www.registerflies.com for the rest of the RF story. It appears we’re stuck in the middle of a huge business scandal.

  2. Thanks, Jon. I’m actually visiting that site on a daily basis already whilst I struggle to transfer my domains away.

  3. You’re lucky you actually received the transfer confirmation emails…. well, sort of lucky I suppose.

I’m not even receiving those because Registerfly has set the status of all of my domains to appear locked to other Registrars. This despite showing my domains as unlocked in the Registerfly control panel. Just to be clear, I have no billing disputes with Registerfly and they have no reason to set that status as far as I know, except for to prevent transfers away. (Question: why do they care if I transfer the domains away, you’d think they’d want to willingly let customers go rather than get even more pissed off at them)

Here is the listed status for all of my domains:
    clientTransferProhibited
    clientUpdateProhibited

    Good stuff.

Further to that, the AUTH code listed in Registerfly’s control panel for several of my domains is incorrect.

Best of luck all ye hapless Registerfly customers, and wish me some too.

Here is the body of one of my recent tickets:

You should be apprised that I will be submitting an official complaint to ICANN if my upcoming domain transfers are not handled properly as per the terms of the ICANN Policy on Transfer of Registrations between Registrars:
    http://www.icann.org/transfers/policy-12jul04.htm

According to these policies you are obligated to provide “a readily accessible and reasonable means for the Registered Name Holder to remove the lock status”.

I have had numerous problems with Registerfly in the past and I am simply trying to move my service elsewhere - I would appreciate it if you could handle this in a professional manner.

Thanks in advance for your time.

  4. RegisterFly still haven’t sorted out their SSL cert or answered any of my support tickets since 3rd February, but from reading RegisterFlies, you might believe that there’s hope yet.

Well, unless someone pulls their finger out quickly I stand to lose some domains I’d rather keep.

I just hope I’m not jumping out of RegisterFrying pan and into NameCheap’s fire. At least they’re still eNom resellers so there’s an escape route there should something similar happen.

Just who are the trustworthy domain registrars? eNom? They have their share of horror stories too, but I get the feeling they’re more stable than RegisterVolcano.

Leif, I’m seeing the same inpenetrable lock preventing some of my domains from being transferred away too. Seems we’re not the only ones. Good luck!

  5. A bunch of my domains completed their transfer today despite the fact that I’ve not been able to confirm their transfer with the RegisterFly system (see screenshots above).

I’ve not even tried to confirm the transfers on some of them so it looks like that part of the process is being skipped. At least, it was in my case…

  6. Hey Will,

I fought my way out of the registerfly nightmare (about 100 domains that I had there over five years of use) for almost two months. Keep submitting tickets. Generally tickets should address individual issues or at least a single category of issue.

    I.e. - locked domains
    failed renewals
    incorrect status codes
    overbilling issue

to name just a few registerfly nightmares should each go into separate tickets. Don’t complain about being double charged for a failed renewal in a ticket about trying to get the renewal to succeed. Billing won’t do anything about it, nor will tech support. They will both ignore you.

    One thing at a time.

Where you want to go is DynaDot.com. Very fast website and helpful customer service.

More on the Registerfly.com meltdown including enom misdeeds.

  7. Hi Alec,

Thanks for the suggestion. I’ve read that in some cases people’s account have been suspended due to an excessive number of support tickets! Whether or not that’s true, I don’t know.

I do know and I completely agree that you should only raise one issue in any one ticket. I’ve raised multiple issues per ticket in the past, but support had a tendency to answer one query and then closing the ticket without addressing the remaining issues.

I’ve actually very few domains that I want to keep left in RF’s hands so the number of issues I have with them are dwindling.

I believe the term is ‘cutting my loses’!
