Building A Non-IM List For Profit

January 22nd, 2007

I’m currently trying to build a list of newsletter subscribers in a non-Internet marketing niche, primarily through the use of a Google AdWords campaign offering a free info-product. If my ad-writing is on target, the free product should be just what qualified searchers are looking for and once on the list, each opt-in subscriber will receive a series of emails with useful advice and my promotions.

To the list, I’m currently promoting:

  1. a 3rd party membership website that offers a residual income for me as long as they’re a member (affiliate links are in the free info-product as well as being dropped into the newsletters) and
  2. a video info-product from an expert in the industry, to which I have resell rights for and am selling using a home-made PayPal IPN script.

Ad spend is currently approximately £25 with a whopping 7.35% click-through rate (CTR). That’s 63 clicks across 3 ad variations, during the first 10 days of the campaign. The worst performing ad is generating a CTR of 6.35% and the best, 7.91%.

Of those click-throughs from my ads to my landing squeeze page, 20 people have subscribed to my newsletter in order to download their freebie, but 4 haven’t confirmed their subscriptions so they won’t be getting anything, 2 have dropped out and 1 has reported me for spamming.

Of the remaining 14 opted-in subscribers, 2 have responded to my 2nd email, which asks them if they received their free download okay. Both of those people are female and giving me more information about what they’re after. In my 3rd email is when I first promote the video info-product. 8 subscribers have received this message and 1 purchase has been made.

Things to do:

  • Think of a way to minimise the number of people submitting their email, but not confirming their subscription.
  • Set up a new list for people who buy the video info-product as I know they’re definitely interested in that type of product.
  • Find or develop more good quality products to promote to the list!

What’s great about targeting a non-IM niche is that the audience won’t necessarily be on the look out for selling techqniques that we’re all familiar with or trying to avoid/hijack affiliate links.

  1. It’s great to see someone documenting their progress in a non-IM niche, with real numbers!

    1 sale from 20 opt-ins is a 5% conversion - not bad at all :)
How much are you making from pitching the products? Is your ROI for the ad spend OK?

    Keep up the good work.

  2. Thanks, Will.

The conversion rate so far is good, but it’s still very early days so it could still change dramatically either way.

The only products I’m currently pitching to the list are the membership website and the video info-product. As yet, no one has joined the membership website and the video purchase was worth £15 so overall I’m down. However, there’s still the possibility that someone will join the membership website and then it’ll be a recurring commission each month as long as they’re a member.

With a few more good quality products to promote, the ROI should increase nicely.
