A recent question on a forum asking about where existing businesses could be bought reminded me of a couple of websites where they’re often sold; SitePoint and Daltons Business. As with any potential purchase of this kind, it’s prudent to carry out thorough research on what’s being offered. SitePoint’s Marketplace, in particular, can allow someone with a relatively small budget to hit the ground running with a fully operational, established business in very little time.
For someone who dreams about running their own business, but just doesn’t have the know-how or the drive to go through all of the necessary development, buying an existing business can be a short cut to their ambitions. Likewise, I’ve known people to take on board existing businesses only to find out that the customers never existed or were totally fed-up and on the brink of leaving. It can be a dream, but it can also be a nightmare.
Caveat emptor!
