There have been many articles and books written on the subject of powerful marketing words or words that help to increase the chance of a sale, but can individual words really harness any influence on their own?
It’s difficult to think of individual words having much selling power on their own unless they’re part of a advert for a new designer fragrance. After all, mere words without their peers to form sentences would only be able to communicate their own definitions and even they can vary depending on context.
However, when you’re stringing complete sentences together in an effort to punt your latest product you’re probably thinking about the words you can use. You know, the words that everyone tells you to use like “discover” or “revealed” or doubled up to produce marketing phrases such as “exploding profits”. Each word almost has its own story waiting to be told using the reader’s own imagination.
I’ve been thinking about this quite a lot recently and examining the type of language used in many recent sales letters. Here’s a few of the words I consider to be good at selling, if ever there were any:
- Secret – Everybody loves a secret and what’s more enticing than being offered the chance to share one. Not only will you find out stuff that your competition probably doesn’t know about, but someone is offering to trust you with their secret!
- Free – Who doesn’t like free stuff? Even those of us who are cycnical enough to believe that nothing is free and there’s always some sort of transaction going on find it hard to turn our noses up at a well-crafted free offer. If you’ve ever heard of Butterfly Marketing then you’ll probably know that one of the core concepts is to offer something for free as a way of pulling people in before hitting them with an offer they can’t refuse.
If I offered you a free secret that would help you get more money, would you be interetsed?
